Remove This week, Duke Energy and Progress Energy, two Fortune 500 utilities headquartered in my home state of North Carolina, announced their plans to merge. The new company, to be called Duke Energy and to be headquartered in Charlotte, will become the nation's largest electric utility. When I heard the news, my immediate thought was for the 29,600 employees involved. Trust me, as someone who's worked for a company which has gone through a merger, I can assure you, the first thoughts of those Duke and Progress employees didn't have anything to do with stock prices or savings resulting from the combination of the two companies. If those employees are anything like me when I got the news that Nextel was merging with Sprint, they spent this week focused on what the news meant for them personally. Will have a job when this is all over
